This committee is responsible for encouraging student and public education on HIV and its oral manifestations in hopes of continuing the decrease in provider stigma. UCLA serves many HIV+ patients, and it is important for student dentists to be informed about the best ways to provide care for these patients. Past events include monthly visits to HIV community centers in the Los Angeles area, presentations on oral lesions often seen in HIV patients, and Lunch & Learns discussing access to care issues.

Additionally, the committee also focuses on increasing student and public awareness of oral cancer, especially in lower-income communities. Its secondary goal is to provide patients with oral cancer screenings and referrals when appropriate. The committee also organizes ASDA’s involvement in the Oral Cancer Walk every year.
